A Kruti Dev Word file, read as Hindi

Kruti Dev was a common way to type Hindi in Word. The file looks like Hindi on a computer that has that font. On a computer that does not, the same file looks like a string of Latin letters and odd signs. A normal “export to PDF” copies that broken look. This desk tries to read the Kruti spelling and write real Devanagari instead.

Why the PDF looked unreadable

Kruti Dev 010 does not store the Unicode letters अ, आ, क, कि. It stores its own key positions. The font draws those keys as Hindi. If the PDF only embeds the keys, and not a font that draws them, a reader sees the keys. That is why a village certificate or an old office notice can turn into nonsense after conversion.

Word to PDF on priyaonline.com looks at the paragraph and at the font name on the runs. When the text looks like Kruti, or the font name says Kruti, the desk maps those spellings to Unicode and draws them with a Devanagari font that is bundled with the site. English sentences in the same file are left as English. A line that is already Unicode Hindi is not run through the Kruti map again.

The steps

  1. Keep the DOCX. Do not convert your only copy.
  2. Open PriyaPDF Tools and choose Word to PDF. The file should be a .docx.
  3. Download the PDF and open it on a phone that does not have Kruti Dev installed. That is the real test.
  4. Read names, village names, dates and amounts. Look at इ and ई, at the matra that sits before the consonant, and at half-letters such as प्र, त्र and क्ष.
  5. If one word is still wrong, open that PDF in PDF Editor and correct the piece. Save PDF again.

Text to PDF is the other door. Paste the text, choose page size, margin, font size, spacing and alignment. The Kruti Dev menu offers auto, on, and you can leave auto when you are not sure. Auto converts a paragraph only when it looks like Kruti. On forces the conversion. Use On only for text you know was typed in Kruti. Forcing it on ordinary English will scramble that English.

What the converter will not promise

The map follows the long-used Kruti Dev 010 pairs, including the conjuncts people actually typed. It is not a promise that every private font, every DevLys file, or every scanned image of Kruti text will come out perfect. A scan has no letters to map until OCR reads the picture, and OCR of a decorative font is weaker than reading a real DOCX. Unusual spellings, a mixed font inside one word, and text sitting inside a Word shape can still need a manual fix.

If the download is readable on your computer only because Kruti Dev is installed there, send it to another device before you call the job finished. The person who receives the form may not have that font.

Kruti Dev हिंदी को अपने कीबोर्ड के अक्षरों में रखता है। जिस कंप्यूटर पर वह फॉन्ट है, वहाँ पेज हिंदी दिखता है। जहाँ फॉन्ट नहीं है, वहाँ वही पेज अटपटे अंग्रेज़ी अक्षर बन जाता है। साधारण PDF अक्सर वही अटपटा रूप ले आती है।

इस साइट पर Word to PDF उस वर्तनी को पहचानकर यूनिकोड देवनागरी लिखता है। फॉन्ट के नाम में Kruti हो या पंक्ति Kruti जैसी दिखे, तब यह बदलाव होता है। जो पंक्ति पहले से असली हिंदी है, उसे दोबारा नहीं तोड़ा जाता। अंग्रेज़ी वाक्य अंग्रेज़ी रहता है। Text to PDF में Kruti Dev auto अपने आप पहचानता है। On तभी चुनें जब पूरा टेक्स्ट Kruti में टाइप हुआ हो। अंग्रेज़ी पर On मत लगाइए।

डाउनलोड को ऐसे फोन पर खोलें जिस पर Kruti Dev इंस्टॉल नहीं है। नाम, गाँव, तारीख, रकम, मात्रा और आधे अक्षर खुद देखें। एक शब्द गलत हो तो PDF Editor में उसी टुकड़े को सुधार कर फिर सेव करें। स्कैन की हुई तस्वीर DOCX नहीं है। उसके लिए पहले OCR है, और सजावटी अक्षरों पर OCR कमजोर पड़ता है। अपनी इकलौती फाइल को बदलने से पहले कॉपी रखें।
